Why Spaying and Neutering Matters
Spaying is the removal of the uterus and ovaries, and neutering is the removal of the testicles. Sterilization surgery has a number of significant benefits, including:
Litter Control
Every pet deserves a loving home, but unwanted litters result in strays, overcrowded shelters, and euthanization. By spaying or neutering your pet, you play an important role in tempering the burden on animal shelters and the abundance of stray animals.
Better Health
Spaying your dog or cat can prevent serious health issues such as testicular cancer, mammary cancer, and uterine infections. We can help you take this important step toward giving your pet a longer, happier life.
Better Behavior
Heat cycles can have an unwanted effect on your female cat or dog's behavior. Meanwhile, the breeding instinct will drive male cats and dogs to venture far from home. This treatment can make your pet a more compatible companion and keep them safe at home.
A Closer Look At How Spaying and Neutering Helps Pets Live Longer
A study by the University of Georgia analyzed the records of more than 70,000 pets. Results showed that neutered male dogs had 13.8% longer lifespans compared to their intact counterparts. Spayed female dogs had a 26.3% higher life expectancy.
A study conducted by Banfield Pet Hospital® included the records of approximately 460,000 cats. It found that spayed female cats had 39% longer lifespans, and neutered male cats had an incredible 62% increase in life expectancy.
We all know that as our pets age, they often require frequent and costly veterinary care to keep them healthy and comfortable. Spaying or neutering your pet is a quick and low-cost way to maximize the quality years of love and fun you spend together.

Cats
The American Animal Hospital Association endorses spaying or neutering cats by the time they are five months old. Kittens who undergo sterilization at this age tend to recover very quickly.
Dogs
The AAHA recommends that small male dogs (those under a 45-pound projected adult body weight) should be neutered at six months, while female puppies of the same size should be sterilized at five to six months. They recommend neutering larger male dogs when they have finished growing (between nine and 15 months). A large-breed female dog should typically be spayed between five and 15 months, depending on your veterinarian's recommendation.
We Can Microchip Your Pet During Their Spay or Neuter Procedure
Having your pet microchipped is another excellent way to keep them protected. A microchip is a small device, roughly the size of a single grain of rice, that is implanted below the surface of the skin. It contains a unique code that serves as your pet's personal ID. In the event your pet ever gets lost, veterinary practices and animal rescues across the country can use this information to get them back home. If you have a dog or a cat who loves to roam outdoors, a microchip can help them stay safe.
Microchipping is very similar to administering a typical injection, so it doesn't require anesthesia or sedation. However, many pet owners who work with our Marietta practice choose to have their companions microchipped during spaying or neutering, which are performed under general anesthesia. Combining the procedures can ensure a pain-free experience for your pet and streamlines two very important veterinary services.
Take the extra step to keep your friend safe by including microchipping as part of their spay or neuter procedure. Send us a message or give us a call to get started.
